It's good, but...,
This review is from: LEGO Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Let's start off by saying I'm 36, bear with me, it's relevant.
Bought this as I loved the other lego SW games, and lego Indy. Overall, it's great fun, some interesting new gameplay features plus everything else you expect from lego.
However, some things do go against it for me.
For this installment the anti has been upped in terms of graphics; great landscapes, textures etc - really good in HD. However for me this detracts from the charm of the lego games. I'd compare how this game looks when compared to the previous games with how lego toys look now compared to when I was a kid in the late 70's / early 80's. My lego toys as a child had about 3 colours of bricks, in 3 shapes - everything you built looked simple and cutesy, just like the previous lego games. Lego these days is all about fiddly bits that make up a particular object and are much more detailed, just like the lego in the The Clone Wars game. Nostalgia perhaps, but for me the simple cutesy visuals were a large part of the charm of lego games.
As for the gameplay, while overall it's still great fun, I did have a few complaints. Levels seem v short, and often repetitive (walk down tunnel, bash droids, walk down more similar tunnels, bash more droids). I haven't seen the clone wars series, perhaps it's a very accurate interpretation of what happens, but for me the levels lacked the rich detail and variety of previous games. Boss battles are also a bit repetitive with several scenes of the similar action.
Despite this simplicity and repetition of levels, I also often found myself wondering what to do next, with no obvious objectives, which became a bit tedious. The level selection/navigation style is a bit confusing too.
So, all in all, good, innovative in places, but felt a little lazy in terms of level design, and for me, just didn't look 'old school lego' enough. Perhaps at 36 I should give up the computer games!
