This review is from: Jersey Shore Shark Attack [DVD] (DVD)
Not having seen the Jersey Shore TV show I almost made the mistake of switching this movie off after a few minutes. After underwater drilling unleashes a pack of red-eyed, albino Bull Sharks and a quick couple of zero-budget style shark attacks involving a young couple and a fisherman and a brief intro of the main characters it cuts to Sal's bar and a 4th of July weekend wet t-shirt contest watched by a group of muscle-bound Italian Americans (GUIDOS) led by TC (The Complication) played by Jeremy Luc who looks like a young Jean-Claude Van Damme and watching them are their hair-twiddling, mega-tanned girlfriends (GUIDETTES) led by Nooki "Whatever!.... you mean he drownded..." played by Melissa Molinaro. The contest is in full swing when it is interrupted by some similarly muscular but rich "Preppies", led by Bradley and Spencer and soon descends into a mass brawl.
It soon dawned on me that I had been double bluffed and that this was not just the worst film I had ever seen but a reasonably clever spoof. I wrongly assumed this was based on the renowned 1916 New Jersey shark attacks and having never seen the Jersey Shore TV series Jersey Shore - Season 1 [DVD] I was oblivious to the connection. I checked imdb and soon recognised lots of the characteristics of the main characters of that series and that, along with almost every shark cliché you can think of thrown into the mix makes it worth watching, if you are in the right mood.
The dialogue is superb and from the moment JP calls out "Preppies, come out to Play-ay!" in a nod towards The Warriors (1979) and leaps into the sea to avoid the chasing Preppies it's played almost totally for laughs ... when they see the fisherman's overturned boat.. "Hey isn't that Vinny's stuff?" "Which Vinny? Vinny Nonack? "no Brov, Vinny Bananas', "Bananas is in Florida, "I mean Vinny Knuckles" "Knuckles is dead" "That must be Vinny Bumbazza's boat!" "It's not ... it's Vinny Kraps" "Oh...." and "Looks like things just got quamplicated", most of the best lines are reserved for Nooki and Balzac, the wannabe Italian.
The Guidos try to persuade TC's dad, the Sheriff, that there's a group of killer sharks on the prowl but aren't taken seriously until a live performance by Joey Fatone of N Sync is unexpectedly interrupted. Throw in some Jaws style business interest trying to play down the threat and lots of cheesecake and beefcake as well as appearances by Paul Sorvino, Jack Scalia and William Atherton, lots of fireworks and you've got a pretty decent film sadly let down by the not-so special effects. I know it's a low budget spoof but dodgy CGI monster movies are ten a penny it just needed a little more attention to that aspect.
Still, I've watched it twice in three days and although it fails to keep up the spoof quotient and occasionally, sadly it lapses into periods of seriousness, it's still funny enough to ensure that I will be watching it again and again.
