... MSG man returns to his roots ...,
This review is from: Rock 'n Roll My Soul (Audio CD)
In case you were wondering, Gary John Barden is the same fellas as Gary Barden (without the John), former, present and future vocalist with the Michael Schenker Group. Of course he's also worked with the likes of Praying Mantis, Statetrooper and Silver as well as being a solo artist.
This latest album, "Rock 'n' Roll My Soul", sees him resorting to that time old tradition for musicians of a certain age. Yes. it's the cover version album. Or rather a "tribute to his idols and to the immortal songs of the time." Sorry, my mistake.
Now, unlike some, I'm a fan of the covers album. However, they can go horribly, horribly wrong, as you listen to the same old songs being murdered time and again. But, thankfully, this is one of the good ones. He's went for a few of the less obvious choices, so you get 'never Before' and 'When A Blind Man Cries', from the Deep Purple catalogue instead of 'Smoke On The Water'. He's picked one of my favourite Moody Blues tunes. 'I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock'n'Roll Band)' and done it justice, and there are trips back in time to Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Faces and Fleetwood Mac, amongst others.
There are a couple of misfires, especially 'The Long And Winding Road', but the man himself is in good voice, and producer Michael Voss has put together a good team of musicians including Tommy Denander and Don Airey, although he takes care of most of the instrumentation himself.
