5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant show from the 70's . No Lie!!, 15 May 2007
This review is from: Billy Liar - Series 2 [DVD] [1973] (DVD)
This series from the early/mid 1970s definately stands the test of time, unlike so many of our former favourites from yester-year. I recal sitting with the family to view this every week (no VCR recorders in those days. Missed it and maybe never see it again!!) The jokes are still as smile giving as they ever were, i found myself revelling back in the memories of the time whilst watching it. Although i am not saying you have to be over 40 to appreciate this, it stands the test of time, and can still be viewed today giving as many laughs as it ever did. This must be both due to a great cast, along with Jeff Rawle playing Billy, there is Colin Jeavons giving a masterpiece performance as Mr Shadrach, Billys boss at the funeral parlour. Not forgetting George Cooper, who plays Jeff Fisher his dad, with his constant threats to "knock you clear through that bloody wall" or "kick you up and down those stairs" somehow still raising a smile, probably at his sheer exasperation at Billy's constant thieving coffin handles from work (once a coffin too!), or his daydreaming. I admit i envied Billy's abillity to have such vivid day dreams. Oh that i could escape the dreay day to day so easily. But maybe that was part of the shows success, as it was something we all must need at some time or other. Just a careless phrase could have Billy Wafted away on a cloud of thoughts, to be a rich aristocrat, with his family as his servants, or Billy could just as easily imagine them as monsters and him with a stake and silver bullets!

The package consists of two discs to cover the 13 episodes(so great to see a uk tv show that isn't 6 shows long per series) and one extra in the form of a Kieth Waterhouse episode of The south bank show. Well worth the money in my humble opinion.

Funny how Dad's "bloody"s in the first series now became "swining"s and "pigging"s. Spoiled it for me a bit. Sad victory for the Whitehouse brigade?
