This review is from: 50 People Who Fouled Up Football (Hardcover)
Henderson has very strange opinions. He mixes matters of taste with pure facts. I don't mind, for example, if he hates the David Beckham Phenomenon. Beckham's super star / sex symbol status etc. But Henderson has a bad memory or he is unsuitable as football writer. If you write about football you should take a look at results.
But, in various cases, he tells us, for a fact, that Beckham was over-rated as a player and a England captain. According Henderson, the biggest mistake England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson ever did was to have Beckham as a player and specially a captain in World cup 2006.
Hmm. Let's see: According the FIFA Statistics, Group Stage B went like this:
10.6.2006 England - Paraguay 1-0 (Paraguay's own goal, thanks to Beckham's magnificent free-kick)
15.6.2006 England - Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 (Beckham - FIFA's Man of the Match)
20.6.2006 Sweden - England 2-2 (Beckham played 90 mins, no yellow cards)
Knock-out phase / round of 16 :
25.06.2006 England - Ecuador 1-0 (60' Beckham)
round of 8 :
1.7.2006 Portugal - England 0-0 / a.e.t. 0-0 / 3-1 after penalties
If you look carefully the facts above, does it really look like David Beckham was a failure? Or that Eriksson did a mistake when he decided to have Beckham in his selection?
