5.0 out of 5 stars A grown up album presenting a suite of heartfelt, composed music, 19 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ghost Stories (MP3 Download)
All the best bands have albums which tell the story of where they were in their careers/lives at the point when they wrote the songs and Ghost Stories is no different.

Coldplay are experts at putting together that long lost art form of an "album" rather than a collection of loosely collected tunes. Pieces of music that you listen to in their entirety because they make more sense that way.

Mylo Xyloto was a screaming thunderbolt of feel good that said "we are Coldplay, we are one of the best bands in the world and this will be one of our headline albums that even a non Coldplay fan will buy and that we will do huge shows off the back of." Let's face it the album then became the 2012 Paralympic Closing Ceremony Soundtrack!

This album however doesn't want to order you to crank the volume up and risk breaking your speakers with anthems, rather it invites you to sit down, relax, absorb, listen and understand the emotion of what you are hearing.

Here is a very personal collection of songs to be listened to as simply the next part of the Coldplay discography. It is not a stand alone album but is the latest destination on the Coldplay journey.

In my opinion this is a beautiful, chill out, piece by one of my favourite bands. If you appreciate music you will appreciate this. Some may say this is a self indulgent piece but I'm sure the same was said about Beethoven when he was a global headline act with everyone waiting eagerly for his next release.

Intelligent music - an album.... remember those?

Put the CD on (or make sure the album is sorted in track number order on your mp3) - press play and leave it to play until the final note.

...and if you want to understand it more then go onto You Tube and search out the excellent interview with Zane Lowe

"but is the latest destination on the Coldplay journey"

"Journey"?! Isn't that something that X-Factor contestants go on? And comparisons to Beethoven - hmm, think Dire Straits might be more appropriate. Boring band, boring music.

Have to agree with Shopping Voucher, apart from the song 'True Love'which was great, the whole album is too laid back and the drums sounded like a drum machine!,the album as a whole could send you to sleep really fast,if it was not for the annoying Drum Machine sound and very much like listening to a Sting,Dire Straits or later U2 albums, easy on the ears, bland and pretentious at times.

You sure mate - this album 'and I love Coldplay' is pants, listen to it again without the rose tinted glasses on and then compare it to the early efforts and justify its 'grown up' sound, but its lacking in sound, direction and above all catchy songs, which after all that what we love about Coldplay, right?

At first listen it did pass me by waiting track by track for the hook but a dozen listens in and it's definitely a grower. It's Coldplay but it's also new Coldplay......... many will hate it because it's such a detour from what's gone before and it's definitely not mainstream like Mylo Xyloto. Anyone who bought that album as their first Coldplay experience and buys this just because of that expecting more of the same WILL be disappointed.

I don't think this album is meant to be in competition with what has gone before. Chris Martin in his interview with Zane Lowe says he is happier with this album than anything which went before. This album is mellow and from the heart and, especially after watching the aforesaid interview, it perhaps makes you understand it a bit better although all Chris Martin's credibility goes when he says that One Direction are currently the best band in the world!

Well if Mylo Xyloto was a journey on happy pills then Ghost Stories is the morning after.... every album has been different in it's own way. If everyone agreed with each other about what was good and what was bad then we'd all be living in North Korea.

Says it all when a artist says this is his best work, usually means self indulgent but good points Chris,he also said that about One Direction!,says a lot about the state of the charts these days, not sure what it says about Chris Martin mind!!.

The review is as much drivel as the album.
