This review is from: The Buckland Romani Tarot Kit: In the Authentic Gypsy Tradition (Cards)
I have a more than a couple of books on the art of Tarot reading and I have to say I was very impressed from the outset with this book and deck of cards. The cards are based on an English-Gypsy theme (the author himself is a gypsy half-blood) and are beautifully illustrated by Lisanne Lake. You are first introduced to the cards by a brief outline of gypsy heritage which is to the point and an interesting read. This is followed by the explanations of each cards, as is the norm for most Tarot books however, unlike most of the other Tarot books I have read, Raymond Buckland believes that the most important thing when reading the cards is to get a sense of what you are seeing. He does not therefore spend page after page on long winded descriptions of the precise meanings of each card. He provides a brief synopsis of the "meaning" of each card but then encourages the reader to really look at each card, to see what other things stand out. He uses brief and simple language that is so easy to read, that you almost feel like you are reading a novel. He describes each card with such enthusiasm, it has definitely left me with the confidence to leave all my books behind and really concentrate on what the cards are saying, rather than being bogged down in narrative and worrying about having my normal book to hand so I can give a more "precise" reading. He imparts such an enthusiasm for the cards and the gypsy lifestyle that I find is lacking in many other Tarot and indeed a lot of other divination books.
I would heartily recommend this to anyone interested in the art of Tarot, be they a novice looking for a starting point or an expert looking for a down-to-earth, passionate perspective on tarot reading.
