Avoid this badly edited version,
This review is from: Jazz - A Film By Ken Burns [DVD] (DVD)
This is the butchered BBC version of the series, and it is missing nearly 7 hours of footage. Quite why somebody there felt they were qualified, or indeed needed to cut over 33% of the running time from such a landmark series is beyond me, but they have ended up doing Ken Burns no favours at all. I believe whoever took the decision felt that 20 hours was too much for British viewers, and probably went on to fill the remaining airtime with an antiques, cookery, or home improvement programme instead!! You can import the full 10 disc US version for less than the price of this Region 2 botch job, and it is well worth doing so. Not only do you get the full uncut episodes spread over 10 discs, but much better picture and sound quality than on the 4 disc hatchet job.

I`m glad I read the review by "Intaylor3" of the DVD set on "JAZZ" by Ken Burns. I`m not as knowledgeable on jazz as I`d like to be, but I think I would have felt somewhat cheated had I purchased this U.K. edition only to find that chunks of it were missing. I think perhaps I`ll opt for the U.S. version instead!

p.s. As an aside, this reminds me about a friend of mine who, some years ago, purchased
a set of video tapes of "The world at war" from the BBC and discovered there
were several hours of viewing edited out from the television version.

Why is this review coming up under the Civil War set when the review is for the Ken Burns Jazz series?

Thanks for your review. I suppose in BBC speak, this is what they mean by "Special Edition"!

Totally agree with this review, I would be totally p****d off to have to accept the UK truncated version. After visiting my sister in the USA in 2003, I was fortunate to purchase the USA version. For convenience I also have the 'full' USA version downloaded from iTunes.
Wonderful series (boxset) that anyone remotely interested in jazz should have in their collection.

Because of Amazon's bone-headed "product group" policy, under which reviews are cross-posted to unrelated items simply on the basis of the title.

Is it just not Worth it ?
I really want to see it, so I have to ask; if there was only
one Version, this 12 hour Version, would it still be bad?
Are there som vital portions missing ?
could you please explain what this Version is missing, I really
want to know.
Reading 20 reviews that says "butchered" doesnt really help, and
generally most People do not want to deal With the ntsc, pal
region free issues, so a lot of People from the European
countries want to see this documentary, and if this is not
Worth 12 hours of their lives, Then the reviewers should
me more specific about what makes them say : "avoid".
This is not meant as a negative comment, I hate the fact
that this is edited, but still, I would like to know what material
is missing, details please.
and, we should Write to bbc and telle them they butchered
one of the finest documentaries, and that they are not competent
to touch this kind of Cultural historic lecacy.
