A lovely alternative to contemporary tween fiction,

This book really appealed to us as we spend quite a bit of time in the Middle East. I have an 8 year old who is gentle and kind like Princess Haya and loves horses. Despite being a Princess, Haya still goes through lots of the same life experiences as your average 8 year old and there was a lot here which rang true with my daughter.
This story is not so much about princesses, but about the relationship which develops between a lonely girl missing her mother and a lonely foal looking for a mother. It is both funny and sad, inspiring and motivating, and heartwarming. I think it appeals as much to mums, who can't think of anything sadder for their children than losing their mother, as it does to children.
I'm not sure this is aimed at boys as it IS very pink, has a beautiful cover design and a pink ribbon bookmarker. However it is nice to find a novel which is not telling 8 year old girls that they should be having a crush on a particular boy by now.
