This review is from: The Final Whistle: The Great War in Fifteen Players (Paperback)
Whether it is our love of the game of rugby, or the fascination we have for the Great War, which initially attracts one to this book there is a great deal more to keep you closely engaged. The theme of relating one Rugby Club's losses in the First World War resonates to a much broader readership as the relationship between the consciousness of a nation to "play the game" on both fields of battle is cleverly intertwined with the lives of 15 men who lost their lives in defence of a bygone Empire and moreover, belief in commitment to selfless support of others.
A wonderfully researched book full of captivating anecdotes that highlights the cameraderie on both fields of battle written with both pathos and understanding and with the right amount of levity to bring a wry smile to ones face when needed.
