If you haven't read the book, you'll love it,
This review is from: Water for Elephants (DVD) (DVD)
I have recently read Water for Elephants and it is one of my favourite reads of the year. I loved it for the detail and the way everything was described. You could almost imagine being there.
Anyway, my other half bought me the film to watch so I thought I would compare the two. I watched the film after reading the book, as I always do.
I'm left a little disappointed. I loved all the circus scenes and thought the story built really well. I wasn't sure about Robert Pattison, as I'm not his biggest fan, but both he and Reese Witherspoon do a fabulous job as the main characters. For me, Walter and August were not how I imagined at all. The friendship between Walter and Jacob was so cleverly done in the book and just rushed in the film.
In fact, I felt everything was a little rushed, especially the ending. When the animals were released from their cages it was clear they weren't real. My other half watched it with me (he hasn't read the book) and said 'it was all leading up to something that just never really happened.'
I think if you haven't read the book, you will really enjoy this film for what it is. If you've read the book, you will notice all the things they have left out and changed, and feel disappointed.

I disagree. I had read the book first and was not disappointed with the film, although bits were missed out. I really enjoyed the film, although the stampede did not live up to my expectations from the book, but otherwise I thought it was well done.

I guess we are all entitled to our opinion. The film was good but I much prefered the book as did other members of my book group (that is what we read the book for.) Glad you enjoyed both x
