Excellent guide to a hidden treasure,
This review is from: Stories in Stone: The Medieval Roof Carvings of Norwich Cathedral: The Medieval Roof Carvings of Norwich Cathedrals (Historical Interest) (Paperback)
Back in the early 90's I was lucky enough to be in a group of art students led up into the nether regions of Norwich Cathedral and given a guided tour of the roof bosses by Martial Rose. The roof bosses really are a hidden treasure; even though they're in plain sight way up above your head they're so high up that it's impossible to make out much detail. Even higher up in the cathedral we were still craning our necks to see the bosses. This book is a fantastic way to see them without cricking your neck (or needing a telescope), and the accompanying text by an acknowledged expert does a great job of decoding the bosses for you - providing a much needed service you wouldn't get when wandering around Norwich Cathedral on your own.
One thing that is sadly lacking from this book though - a photo of the old bike someone somehow had managed to dump on top of the cathedral's enormous organ. God alone knows how they got it up there!
