This review is from: Nothing to Lose (Paperback)
I love Christina Jones' books so as soon as I heard there was a new one out, I was avid to read it. As always, the story is packed with such warm, funny, lovely characters and such edible surroundings that I finished in one sitting and wished it had been twice as long!
'Nothing To Lose' is a lot more than a tale of two greyhound stadiums. The twin storylines, one involving Jasmine who has been left a bookie's pitch and a stake in a stadium badly in need of a facelift by her grandfather and who is determined to change the shape of her life by making a go of both, and the other involving single-Mum, April, who is cramming three jobs into her day and practising lies and deception as a matter of course in order to build a dream for her infant daughter, start to dovetail beautifully when April rescues a failed greyhound and enters it in a race at Jasmine's stadium.
There is, of course, much more than this, and the novel is packed with all the splendid eccentrics which are such a hallmark of a Christina Jones book. Lovable ones, ones you want to throw things at, and most of all, gorgeous caring men you'd be quite happy to take home and live with forever. You don't even have to know about dog racing to appreciate it, all is explained so subtly that you don't even realise you've been told about it.
All in all, a lovely, funny, feel-good book that I'll read over and over again.
