This review is from: Haden Triplets (Audio CD)
The triplet daughters of renowned Jazz bassist Charlie Haden. He's a story in himself! Being triplets and part of a musical heritage going back to a time when Charlie was a very young boy and part of a family C&W group that sang on US radio station KWTO in the '40s, definitely brings something special out in their close harmony singing. In 2008, Charlie recorded with the triplets "Charlie Haden - Family & Friends" exploring those country roots. That album is well worth exploring too. The edge here - for me - is the involvement of Ry Cooder as lead musician and, importantly, as producer. He doesn't need a testament from me, suffice to say that his track record working to bring out the best in artists is second to none. Listen to Mavis Staples' "We'll Never Turn Back" album for a good "compare & contrast" to the Haden Triplets. So, back to them. The vocals are magical. Like the Everly Bros, maybe being siblings brings out that extra edge, that something you can't quite put your finger on. Well, their performances are outstanding or should that be performance, as they seem to sing with one voice. The songs are well chosen and stepping outside of traditional country songs, there's a Nick Lowe song "Raining", no doubt suggested by Ry - his friendship with Nick. The "sound" of the album comes from being recorded in the old house owned by one of the triplets, which has great natural acoustic qualities. The musicianship (Ry + son Joachim on drums + Rene Comacho on bass) is exemplary, in the sense it's always supportive but vibrant to underpin those fabulous vocals. Ricky Scaggs appears on some tracks with his lovely mandolin. This is very special music - let it draw you in. You'll be rewarded....
