A study on sex and fly-fishing. Intriguing.,
This review is from: Nymphomaniac Vol. I & Vol. II (2 Disc DVD) (DVD)
Okay, a notorious director, graphic sexual content, amazing cast - this is the film everyone will be talking about seeing. Wanting to see. But I doubt public will survive the whole 4 hours of "Nymphomaniac", which is a pretty tenuous film, in the cinema (the first part grossed many more millions than the second part - already an indication that many people gave up - and they missed the better part, in my opinion!).
The "Nymphomaniac" is our leading lady Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg, played in her youth by Stacy Martin), now a battered woman in her fifties, who from the tender age of two is... what to call it... a sexual maniac, a self-destructing mechanism who is never satisfied. Film begins with a kind-hearted loner Seigman (played by Stellan Skarsgard) rescuing her and listening to her story through the night (i.e. these 4 hours, they cover a lot of things, from differences of Orthodox and Roman Catholic church to the infamous third wife of Emperor Claudius, and of course there is sex). The story is extreme and often very difficult to watch. There is plenty of flesh, but it's hardly erotic. And it all is pretty unsexy.
The film is sad, it's tragic (it left me feeling empty after I finished the first part). But the tragedy is closely interlinked with humour (for example, when the wife of one of Joe's lovers, played by Uma Thurman, turns up at her flat. But humour aside, the film is raw, honest, contradictory, thought-provoking and exasperating. Absolutely not an easy watch, but for me, it was worth watching. You know what, maybe it deserves all the five stars. Four at least. Come to see it with open mind, in the right mood, prepare to be disgusted and amazed.
OMG, just wait till the end, here's my favourite "joke" - such a spot on song makes the ending erm almost uplifting..?
