Sergeants Takeraway and Booker,
This review is from: Police Squad: Volume 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Let's face it, you either get spoof comedy, along the lines of Airplane, Naked Gun and Police Squad, or you don't. It's not hard to understand, but there are large numbers of people who just don't find it funny. If you are one of them, do not even think of watching Police Squad. If you are the sort of person who finds them funny, you must own Police Squad!
There's a whole breadth of comedy in every episode, from the standard visual gags and one-liners (cigarette? yes, I know) to more developed parodies and double-entendres. Some of the gags appear every episode and do wear a bit thin (Drebin crashing into dustbins), but you can watch each episode more than once and still find gags you didn't spot the first time, and find yourself laughing harder at the gags you did spot.
And, to indulge myself, episode 3 contains my favourite gag of all time: Drebin sets up a local shop to uncover a protection racket. Mr Big returns to his office to find Drebin waiting for him. Asking, "Who are you, and how did you get in here?", he receives the reply "I'm a locksmith, and I'm a locksmith." Genius.
