This review is from: History Of Jazz, The - The Early Days (Audio CD)
With artists such as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Fletcher Henderson, Jelly Roll Morton, Paul Whiteman, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong amongst others, there is nothing to dislike on this celebration of early jazz. Added to the largely instrument collection are some charming vocal inclusions by the likes of the legendary Bessie Smith, Adelaide Hall, Jimmy Rushing and Louis Armstrong.
The cd plays for approximately 75 minutes and the transfers are as good as could be expected - baring in mind that the earliest recording is 96 years old, I think you would have to be very sniffy not to appreciate the quality. Yes, there is some background hiss and crackles so please, be realistic and sensible about expectations.
Tony Watts provides a two-page liner, and there is a list of songwriters and year of recordings which are between 1918 and 1931.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the recordings on this previously owned cd, and look forward to doing so in the future.
