So far so good...,
This review is from: McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2014 - 3 User - 1 Year (PC) (CD-ROM)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I seem to have tried most of the big-name security software packages over the past few years, apart from McAfee, so it was time to give them a go. It's been good so far, the installer checked online for newer versions and removed the 30-day demo version of McAfee from my new PC before installing itself without incident - note that the AntiVirus Plus installer can only remove other McAfee packages but not other company's, which you must remove yourself before installing AntiVirus Plus. Once installed it runs quietly in the background and I wasn't aware of any slowdown in performance (apart from the browser plugins) even when updating itself. The auto-update function seems to run less-frequently than some packages (yes, Kaspersky, I mean you) so interrupts your flow less often. Hard drive scans can be scheduled (they aren't by default) or will just happen automatically when your PC isn't busy doing something else. As mentioned, I didn't like the browser plugins which were installed for Firefox and Internet Explorer, they don't seem to be essential for the security of your PC and only seem to slow some things down, so I just disabled them.
There are myriad settings within the app so you can tweak things to suit yourself, but the interface isn't particularly user-friendly and you find yourself digging through menu after menu trying to find what should be straightforward settings. On the other hand the default setup should work for most people so there shouldn't be too much need to tweak - until things go wrong and you can't find the setting that's to blame. There's also a separate 'modern' app for Windows 8, but that only shows very basic status information and if you click anything it simply bounces you over to the Desktop app to change the settings there. The AntiVirus Plus package seems to offer all the security options you'll need with just a couple of handy utilities, unlike some packages which throw everything but the kitchen sink in, and those utilities are actually quite useful. There's a file-shredder which will securely delete any file you point it at, meaning you don't need any extra shareware app's to do that anymore. Plus there's a couple of assistants, one which will find and delete temporary or no-longer-needed files from your drive and another which checks for available updates for your system and app's - those features are built into Windows of course but the McAfee assistant gathers them together and puts a friendly face on them. My only problem with AntiVirus Plus has been the reliability of the Notification Area icon and menu - this can disappear completely if other apps (usually installers) reset File Explorer, the AntiVirus Plus package is still running in the background protecting your PC but the Notification Area icon and menu disappear until the next time File Explorer restarts. Hopefully a future update might fix this behaviour. Apart from that, so far McAfee AntiVirus Plus seems a competent and useful security package.
