This review is from: Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and the Making of the Twentieth Century (Paperback)This book is for those who have a fatal fascination for the events of 1st July 1916 on the Somme, and who wish to go into the many issues in depth. The research carried out by the author has been awesome in breadth and in depth and many common conceptions of this fatal day, eg 'lions led by donkeys' are challenged and dissected. Once hooked, this work is time-consuming and addictive and I recommend that the reader arms himself with as many good maps of the area in as close detail as he can find.
Unlike some works on the subject, many of the quotations come from the ordinary 'Tommy' and 'Fritz' as well as from officers all the way up the rank ladder. Although the author tries to observe his subject from a prudent distance, he still manages to convey quite graphically the horrors of the first 'Industrial War'.
