A good starter HD camcorder,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Panasonic SD80 Full HD Camcorder - Black (SD Card Recording, x42 Intelligent Zoom, x37 Optical Zoom, Wide Angle Lens & iA + Face Recognition & New Hybrid OIS) (Camera)
The Panasonic HDC-SD80 is what I would describe as a good starter camcorder, ideal for those moving over from a standard definition camcorder or for those wanting their first one. It has little to recommend over the lower models in the range other than the high optical zoom, which is the reason I purchased this.
This has Panasonic's usual superb sharpness of picture and all the colours are defined correctly. So what your eyes see is faithfully represented in your recordings. Some other camcorder brands have very poor colour reproduction and therefore ruin the recordings. Still picture quality is very average and a decent mobile phone will probably take better pictures, but this is usually an area where most camcorders produce poor results. Its a bit unfair that alot of decent modern stills cameras have superb camcorder funtions built in so I think entry level camcorders like the SD80 will suffer as a result. I have a Sony DSC-HX9 stills camera which has superb stills & camcorder quality and probably the best zoom and image stailisation I have seen on any device upto the semi Pro level. And the Sony cost less than the Panasonic.
I would recommend a Panasonic camcorder as they produce superb results, but I would say buy a lower range model or a higher range model depending on your requirements as the only stand out feature of this is the high optical zoom, which is exactly the reason I purchased it, and of which I am very pleased.

Hi Media Man, did you consider the Sony CX190 before deciding on the Panasonic? as see that you are a fan of the Sony stills camera.

Hi, I did look at the Sony range at the time of making my purchase. But it was the high optical zoom of the Panasonic that was the deciding factor for me. Panasonic has 37x where Sony has only 25x. And I needed the clarity of optical zoom rather than any digital enhanced zoom. But I still think the Sony DSC-HX9 stills camera is the perfect high quality alrounder, its only downside is that like most EU spec cameras it limits the camcorder function to 30 minutes per recording session, so you always have to be near the camera to restart recording after each 30 minutes.
