Surprisingly decent, and COULD have been a big hit...,
This review is from: Tape 407 [DVD] (DVD)
There are a lot of "found footage" themed films around right now, and as a fan of this style I should be in my element. Unfortunately many of these are very disappointing and seem to be made in this way because it is cheap and easy to make movie based on video camera footage rather than because they have a story that would make the most of this approach. Tape 407 is another one that I had not heard of anywhere except as a trailer on another low budget DVD I watched, so my expectations were low. I'm pleased to say that this film doesn't do too badly and almost..almost could have been a surprise hit. This film has a great set up and allows tension to build up nicely before things start to kick off. Soon the characters are running scared and are fighting for their lives most convincingly. Some people may complain that one or two characters are annoying, but people are annoying in real life and it helps keep things feeling realistic. The only problem I have with this film is the brief moment of CGI near the end (as mentioned by another reviewer), that looks fairly poor and really does give the film a slightly low budget feel right at the end. It really wasn't needed and I'm sure they could have re-shot that scene to make it more of a teasing glimpse so you couldn't really notice the CGI as much. But never mind, it's still a pretty decent film and it probably deserves better than the current avg rating of 2 stars. I feel like giving it 5 stars to even it out, as I'm sure there are way too many people that dish out 1 star ratings without really thinking it through. No it doesn't really deserve 5 stars, but it certainly doesn't deserve 1 star either.
