This review is from: Insight Guides: Myanmar (Burma) (Paperback)
Having just returned from Myanmar where we relied heavily on this book, I reckon that it deserves a 5 star rating without doubt. Published in 2013, it captures the ancient culture as well as much of the recent political history. It is written in such a way that it makes for truly interesting reading, not something that can be said about many travel guides. Of course we want to pretend that we are not tourists in a country as unique as this - but the fact is that we are and with this guide we felt we could make ethical choices about how to engage with the people and places that we visited. Tourism is going to take off exponentially in Myanmar and there is a real risk that international (especially Chinese) investment in hotels and infrastructure will overwhelm the precious culture. Meanwhile the prospect of tourist dollars is already causing the locals and their children to swarm round tourists as they arrive in a tourist destination. The warmth and charm of the Myanmar people is the most appealing aspect of the country and the more we can learn about the culture and customs, the less likely we are to ruin it with inappropriate behaviour. In the regional sections of the book, we found that the recommendations of what to see, where to stay and eat were accurate, up to date and helpful. If you go you should also read "Letters from Burmah" by Aung San Suu Kyi and Burmese Days by George Orwell. Have a great trip! I'm very envious...
