Very fine - a moving experience,
This review is from: Das Leben der Anderen [DVD] (DVD)
Have just been to see this deeply thoughtful film. I think this is a real actors movie. The expressions and the enigmas written on the faces are almost more important than words. The tension is pretty constant throughout and although the audience senses what may come to pass - the film keeps you wondering, you are not quite sure if what you think is going on is actually going on. All this ties in well with the paranoia, uncertainty and watchfulness that was so much a part of life in the GDR.
I have only one small criticism. Having read Anna Funder's very interesting book - Stasiland on the same subject as the movie - I was expecting some treatment of the thorny subject of willing unpressurised informers. This it seems to me is not dealt with. The movie could have been even darker.
