Once Upon a Time, in a Land not so Far Away...,
This review is from: Reckless (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)For twelve years Jacob Reckless has barely been part of this world. Instead he has journeyed and adventured in a magical land that lies just behind a mirror. A place of elves, fairies, ogres, dwarves, witches and enchanted objects. It's a world Jacob knows and revels in. Until the day his younger brother follows him inside, and everything goes wrong.
Once again Cornelia Funke has created a breathtaking world, every bit as imaginative and fantastic as the one she created for the Inkheart. Steeped in the Grimm Fairytales this story is like stumbling through a confusing and fantastical childhood dream, with a gothic twist and a series of moral dilemmas.
It is also filled with unforgettable characters - flawed Jacob, with as many inner demons to battle as monsters surrounding him; innocent Will, slowly losing all his love and goodness; brave and loyal Fox, emotionally confused; ordinary Clara, driven to the extraordinary out of love; a mercenary dwarf, to whom profit is everything; a king of a hated race, striving to find a place for his people; and a Dark Fairy, with the power to curse all humans into living stone.
Packed with imagination, action, danger, dilemmas, magic, loyalty and love in its many forms, this book has everything a good fantasy needs. But the ending just left me wanting more.
