Sublimely satisfying electronic experience.,
This review is from: Elements of Life (Audio CD)
Tiesto first came to my attention via Faithless's Tarantula (2001), remixing the original to great effect. His Nyana phase left me a bit cold however, and I ignored him for years. Then I heard Tiesto's treatment of JES' "Imagination" and was mightily impressed. This was a mature, skilful, silky electronic backdrop to what is a good song in the first place. It sounded a world away from the electro-naff I'd been hearing in pubs and clubs in the previous five years or so. I made my decision there and then to investigate this Tiesto lark in more depth. I bought Elements Of Life without a second thought. Just one track of the same calibre would have been acceptable. If anything though, he's upped the stakes here. This is a superb set of tracks, the odd duffer aside. Particularly strong are "Everything" with lovely vocals and a great balance in the instrumentation. "In The Dark" excels and has that high-energy section near the end that's to die for. "He's A Pirate" is the closest we come to pure trance here, more old-skool Tiesto but no worse for it. A barnstormer indeed. The oddest sounding track is probably "Dance4Life" which sounds slightly out of place but is immensely potent in its own right, thumping along taking no prisoners. Tiesto is no mere "trance" DJ -that label really misses the mark by a long way these days. Superior melodic electronic music man is more accurate. This guy loves electronic music, playing it, making it, and involving all and sundry. Fantastic CD, I absolutely can't wait for the next one. And isn't that the joy of it all?
