I've been following Lori Pickert's blog and was really pleased to see her book come out -- I ordered it immediately!
And I've been very pleased with her book. Although the blog contains a great deal of information, it is scattered about (as a blog is!) and it is really useful to have all this information in one place, in a structured way, and I don't have to wait for the computer to boot up!
Although the title says "Project-Based Homeschooling," it is really something that any parent could incorporate into their lives, homeschooling or regular schooling. Project-based learning is essentially about following a child's passions and helping them to dig deeply into that passion, rather than just skimming the surface of things. I can remember my own childhood passions and would have loved to have my parents encourage them in this way, perhaps in the holidays outside of school (my family was not homeschooling-inclined!).
Project-based learning is also learning that the child owns, that they are in charge of and which is designed by them to meet their needs. It can be done in groups (family, friends, homeschooling groups) or pursued individually. Parents act in a supportive way, providing opportunities, keeping track of plans and ideas, and helping the children accomplish what the children want to accomplish.
