This review is from: Canon Powershot G9 Digital Compact Camera (Electronics)
I researched online for a long time before settling on this piece of kit and I must say I am absolutely delighted with it. I previously owned a Panasonic Lumix FZ30 which was great in good light but terrible in any other conditions. The Canon trumps it on outright picture quality and user friendliness not to mention size. It is a fairly bulky camera by modern compact standards but I think it feels nice and is quite portable. Will easily fit in a coat pocket for instance.

I am not a professional photographer but I wanted pro-looking results wihtout having to go for an SLR with all the hassle and expense that represents. In short if I see a scene that I would like a photo of then I want a camera that can make this possible as close to what the eye sees as possible - night, day, inside, outside etc. A major strength of the G9 is that it can do just this. At low ISO settings it gives truly remarkable picture quality. At ISO400 its a bit grainy but in a nice film like way. Above 800 I would accept that it is no longer of sufficient quality or detail to print. It can handle a wide variety of situations very well. The scene modes are useful and there are loads of them. The video mode is one of the best I've ever seen. Its manual controls are easy to use and the interface is superb. RAW capability means you have seriously useful post-processing control on issues such as exposure, white balance, colour saturation etc. I had never used this facility before but now I've seen the benefits I always shoot RAW+jpg. Many shots can be recovered using this. One more thing - its macro mode is absolutely superb.

Overall the greatest thing about this camera is that it's small to take with you wherever you go and capable enough to get the pictures you wanted whether they be still or video. Therefore I get many more pictures now than I did previously because the bulk of my previous camera meant it got left at home most of the time.

In short if you're looking for a single camera that pretty much does everything to a high standard - look no further !

I own the "Canon G7", therefore, I empathize with your whole solid review of your "Canon G9" - I did think long and hard on selling it on ebay to upgrade to the G9 after reading all the very positive professional and amature reviews - (were all excellent).

Your review of the G9 is certainly one of the more honest and balanced reviews by an owner Ive seen yet on or, its concise and gets to the point without adding fiction. Yes! its true theres only certain limitations with any top of the range pro compact (non DSLR Digital camera) at (ISO 800 and below)), the G9 I must say in my opinion number one for the time being here at the end of the year in 2008. (very well built) no other camera in the pro-sumer point and shoot market can touch the sheer quality and workmanship of the G9 and G7.

I have decided however to hold on to my Canon G7 and instead invest only an extra £80 odd quid, and purchase the new Canon EOS1000D 10MP CMOS DSLR With I.S KIT Lens, as here on at time of this review I can buy for only £349.99 which taking into consideration the ground breaking technology, is an absolute bargain... Ive watch all the (best video professional reviews on youtube) on the EOS1000D and have decided to buy asap while it remains at this price (£349.99 with 18-55mm Canon I.S KIT Lens)- the bonus for me is the fantastic PC software that comes with the eos1000d the optical image stablization, 10mp Large CMOS sensor, together with canon's own Live view 2.5 inch screen. The main attraction for me is advantages like (noise and grain free) images at very high ISO's 1600, territory out of the G9 league, and any other "top of the range - digital compact camera".

I will be holding on to my G7 and recommend anyone looking for a (pro-sumer point and shoot solution) with many DSLR features, solid build, razor sharp images (at ISO 800 and below), buy the Canon G9 if you dont already own a Canon G7!

J.Francis, thanks again for a very interesting review on your experience with your Canon G9. 5 Stars! ***** is best on price, and next day del on the G9 at present.
