This review is from: Mrs. Hurst Dancing & Other Scenes from Regency Life 1812-23 (Hardcover)
An utterly charming collection of watercolours painted by a young lady during the Regency. She shows her not overly wealthy, but genteel, family in its day-to-day life: failing to coax stubborn donkeys to ford streams, falling off horses, walking to a neighbour's for dinner, papering the salon, fishing, dancing, hunting, and dealing with an excess of flies in the house.
For a Regency fan, this is a must-have, and the commentary provided by Gordon Mingay will provide a few pointers for the uninitiated. I found my flatmates enjoyed the quiet comedy of the scenes, and I had fun examining the clothing and furnishings for a glimpse of how everyday people lived, as opposed to those in fashion plates.
