4.0 out of 5 stars Listen to the instrumental version on the De Luxe Edition, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Man On The Rocks (Audio CD)
When I first listen to the ordinary CD Man On The Rocks with vocals, it was a big disappointment - Mike Oldfield`worst record ever I thought.

Luckily I bought the De Luxe Edition of Man On The Rocks with the instrumental version of the songs. Here you can hear a lot more of Mike`s genius, especially his wonderful guitar. My advice: Throw away the vocal version and enjoy the instrumental edition. It is getting better and better every time I listen to it.

I have been a great fan of Mike since I fist heard a part of Tubular Bells on the radio during a visit to London in 1972 (got hold of a pirate copy on tape then) and have since then bought every CD and DVD he has ever released. I never get bored of the theme from Tubular Bells, a theme Mike has used beautifully on a lot of records - to my wife`s despair.

PS: Have you ever listened to the music Mike made for the movie "Killing Fields". That is probably the best Mike ever has done. The different versions of "Pran`s Theme" really tells the story. I had listened to the record several (= a lot of) times before I saw the movie. Is is a very strong/tough movie to watch, but the music Mike had made, told the hold story in a much better - and stronger - way. Please give it a try!

Thanks Geir, I took your advise and bought the de lux edition and am so glad I did. Agree, the instrumental version far outshines the vocal. While I do enjoy some of Oldfield vocals, he should have stuck with instrumental on this one. For me, Mike Oldfield = instrumental (though I will suffer the odd vocal here and there) So if you are an Oldfield instrumental addict take Geir's advise buy this de lux edition dump the vocals and enjoy the instrumental!!!!

When I first listened to the vocal version, I got very disappointed and thought: "This is over and out" for Mike. But the instrumental version is getting better and better each time I listen to it. It is NOT one of his best CDs, but it shows that there still is hope for another masterpiece from Mike. I never get bored of the different versions of Tubular Bells (I am not to sure that my wife agrees!). After 42 years I still find something new in this theme every time I listen to it. But the best Mike ever has made, after my opinion, is the short and simple versions of Pran`s theme Mike made on the Killing Field CD - so simple, and so cleverly done. The combination of the movie Killing Field and Mike`s music is just a masterpiece. I am hoping Mike still has got the ability to produce another masterpiece.
