This review is from: A Brief History of King Arthur (Brief Histories) (Paperback)
I purchased the book out of my interest in the historical value of the Arthurian myths and this book proved to be an exciting journey.
Primarily, I want to stress that this book is not just for people interested in "legends". Within, Mike Ashley produces one of the most refined academic approaches to a period that we know so little about, that I have ever witnessed. The introductory sections provide a mouth-watering and heavily informative outline of Roman and post-Roman Britain. Names, dates and events included can become useful to any student researching Roman Britain or the Roman influence on Britain. I am currently studying Rome and surprisingly, this book has become a vital part of my research, especially on Roman Britain.
Secondly, the investigation into Arthur himself is also masterful. Ashley delves deep into primary sources available and provides refreshing interpretations. Of course, the records from post-Roman Britain are so lacklustre, that any thesis is effectively guesswork. Mike Ashley's analysis is logical and greatly informative.
Overall, I thoroughly recommend this book. It was actually a lot better than expected. I recommend thoroughly.
