Because It's Christmas,
This review is from: Because It's Christmas (Audio CD)
For me, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without this album. My mum is a HUGE fan of Mr Manilow, and so we've owned this album ever since it first came out.
If anyone is worried or a bit unsure as to the work of Barry, then this album, I would say, is a quite nice departure from his usual mix of ballads and camp pop hits like "Could It Be Magic?" and "Copacabana (At the Copa)". In fact, this is a very nice jazz album, with Manilow putting his own spin on classics such as "The Christmas Song", "White Christmas", "Have Yourself A Merry Christmas" and "Jingle Bells".
But it's the stuff that Manilow has written himself which is the selling point for this album. A bittersweet "I Guess There Ain't No Santa Claus" is quite tongue in cheek blues, while "When The Meadow Was Blooming" and "The Bells Of Christmas" are two of the most beautiful Christmas ballads since Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "The Power Of Love".
There is a bit too much sentimentality in the title track, but if you're listening to it with the right attitude it isn't so bad. Finally, Manilow ends the album on a high with "It's Just Another New Year's Eve", making sure you can play this album after the big day and right up to 31st december.
Thoroughly Recommended! Ho ho ho!
