5.0 out of 5 stars The best 2D platformer in existance, 9 July 2003
This review is from: Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 (GBA) (Video Game)
Gameplay
This is a Story about a Baby Mario and Yoshi. A Strory that took place a long, long time ago. A Stork hurries thorugh the dusky , pre-dawn sky. In his bill he carries a pair of brothers, suddenly a shadow appears in a gap betweem the clouds and races towards the Stork at a blinding speed....SCREEEEEEEEEEETCH! The babies are mine! WOAH. Snatching only one baby, the creature vanishes into the darkness from whence it came. The second baby falls undetected toward the open sea.... OH NO! Meanwhile, down on Yoshi's Island, home of all the Yoshi's, It's a lovely day and Yoshi is taking a walk HUH? Suddenly out of nowhere, a baby falls on Yoshi's back! Well here is the most complete 2D platformer ever. Every level is brimming with clever ideas, great design and sweet little puzzles. The gameplay is simple. You control Yoshi who has Baby Mario on his back. You can eat enimies and make them into eggs. You can then use those eggs to shoot things to kill enimies, complete puzzles, etc. There are 6 worlds, 8 levels in each with 2 extra levels per world on top of that. In each world, level 4 and 8 are castle levels which contain some of the best platforming bosses ever. From Rapheal the Raven to the final fight with Bowser, they are all classic. Everytime you finish a level you are scored. In each level there are 5 flowers (10pts each) 20 red coins (1pt each) and 30stars (1pt each) Stars are obtained through the level, but when you are hit, you lose Mario from your back, and while he's not there you lose stars, so you have to get him back before the stars run out or you die. So as you can see, the idea is to do the level and not get hit ending with 30stars. Not easy :(
Graphics
Still brilliant to this day. Just take a look at the pics above. Its bright and colourful and very inventive. The bosses in the game are HUGE screen filling monsters. The game does all sorts of effects, scaling and rotating, 'mode 7'. It pushed the SNES to its limits and it shows. The world maps are beautifuly done, the enimies are inventive and the levels are full of detail.
Sound
Some of the most unforgetable music ever. EVERY level has head filling music, and i challenge ANYONE to do a Castle level and not have the music on repeat in their head afterwards :p My only complaint is they changed Yoshi's voice to the horrible girly one. The snes 'voice' was much better. Oh, the end music is a strong contender for the best ending music ever.
Lifespan
Beating the levels is pretty easy. It's not uncommon to have built up over 100 lives by the end of the game, but that isnt the challege. Getting 100% on each level is the REAL challenge and while its quite easy on the earlier levels, chances are you will be in tears by world 5 :'(
Overall Summary
Ive pimped this game enough, its one of my favourite games ever and i beg that anyone with a GBA to pick it up asap
Gameplay = 9
Graphics = 9
Sound = 9
Lifespan = 10
Overall Score: 9/10
