EA Have a Special Place in Hell Reserved for Them
I never bothered reviewing this game on release as after a couple days I kind of wanted to forget it ever existed. I should have got a refund I suppose. I lied to myself and thought it would get better as they patched it. As it became clear however that all they wanted to do was sell expansion packs it disappeared into a dusty drawer and never resurfaced. It is quite sad actually.
The game looked quite excellent in the run up to release but EA dug their greedy little hands into it and ripped the thing apart for the sake of more profit. I think this was perhaps the first game that I noticed EA deliberately ruining like this. Since then there have of course been dozens more. Plants vs Zombies 2, Dungeon Keeper, the Battlefield series... and pretty much every EA game slated for release in the future.
The game promised some quite amazing and fantastic things - the scale of the universe, the customisation of characters and everything else and the amazing creature AI. In reality all of these things still existed. Customising the creatures and seeing how the AI responded and made them behave was fantastic. It was just a shame the rest of the game was so... hollow.
The spore stage was fun, hence why they released it as an iOS game at the time. Post creation the creature stage was just a grind really and lacked any real objective. The tribal stage was a largely pointless minigame and the civilisation stage was a laughably cut down RTS. The space stage is where it really fell apart though. So many of the things which had been promised in the beginning were gone and the non stop pirate attacks turned it all into a bugged out grind. When they fixed this it became clear that there wasn’t actually anything else in the game.
It was sort of like they had built a beautifully tuned Ferrari and then forgotten to bolt it all together... and give it an engine. It went nowhere and quickly fell apart.
