This review is from: Performance And Cocktails (Audio CD)
After the promising Word Gets around, it looked as if the Stereophonics could become a very good band. To say this album does not fulfil that potential is something of an understatement. There is nothing here that even comes close to matching the likes of Local Boy In The Photograph and the overall feel is of a pub band who have been overproduced and had the heart knocked out of them . Songs like 'Pick a part that's new' are formula indie-rock, the attempts at big ballads like 'Yesterday tomorrow today' are dreary and the whole album feels made entirely for a mass market of undemanding consumers - a shame considering the band initially promoted themselves on an anti-fashion stance. Those who would rate this so highly are entitled to their opinion but would be well advised to check out the recent album by Shack (HMS Fable) and then ask themselves if 'Performance and Cocktails' really is much good.
