A genuine contender for album of the year...,
This review is from: Original Pirate Material (Audio CD)
Original Pirate Material - quite literally a serious contender for the greatest album this year. From start to finish, this modernist realist genre of poetry set to some brilliant garage beats is encapsulating. I feel as though I am insulting Mike Skinner when I compare him to Eminem, but this album is a breath of fresh air to the UK dance scene, much in the same way Eminem was to US rap culture. Do not be put off by this album being branded UK Garage; this is worlds away from "They Don't Know" by So Solid. This is genuine emerging raw talent. In my opinion, a great album is not a collection of great tracks, infact I'd struggle to name a track which stands out for me on this album. Perhaps Skinner himself makes my point more succinctly when he describes "let's push things forward" as a "movement" rather than a track. This is a complete work made up of smaller parts, rather than vice versa. Whether a UK Garage enthusiast or not, I would challenge anybody to defy the genius of this work. Everybody knows that the future of dance music always comes from the streets. Now the future of dance music is The Streets. A major talent has arrived.
