Ring-like Flash Unit,

This review is from: Opteka RL-600 E-TTL II Macro Twin Ring Lite Flash for Canon EOS 1D, 5D, 7D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 600D, 1000D & 1100D Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics)Having come unstuck before with so-called Canon-compatible flashes which weren't, I hesitated before committing to this device.
However, I have been pleasantly surprised, it works well with my EOS 50D camera; ETTL, manual or multi (strobe-like) modes are available and all seem to work OK. The flash ready indicator appears in the viewfinder when the unit is fully charged as with a normal flash unit. The unit is stated as having compatibility with a wide range of Canon EOS cameras.
It is not a ring flash but a two-flash unit (right and left) made up to look like a ring device. This means that in use there are still residual shadows detectable, but these are barely noticeable except on shots of geometric subjects sitting on surfaces. That said it is a useful unit which I shall rely on to find out if close-up photography is what I really want to do. There is a comprehensive manual supplied in reasonably good English which was evidently compiled by the (enthusiastic) designer of the device, a good sign that the text is likely to be accurate.
There are modelling lights (top & bottom of the ring) which are switched on with the LCD display backlight and stay on for about 15 seconds. They can be used for pre-focussing on really close objects in the dark but don't have the power for any distance work.
The flash effective distance is quoted in the manual as 1.1 to 40 inches, although the LCD distance scale is calibrated up to 18 metre. I think this has something to do with the cryptic comment in the manual that the LCD distance scale display must be divided by 10 to get an accurate distance read-out. A consequence, I guess, of the use of a modified conventional flash unit to provide the electronics for the flash ring. I've yet to test this out.
The unit is of acceptably robust construction, although the flashtube selector switch does seem to be a bit of an afterthought & rather flimsy. We shall see in time if it lasts or falls to bits.
The flash heads swivel to suit subject distance and can be individually selected left, right or both. The power output can be varied from full (Guide Number 20 metres, ISO100, 50mm zoom) to 1/64 power in 6 levels by selecting on the control panel in manual mode. The flash duration is quoted as 1/420 to 1/50,000 and zoom range 24 - 85mm.
For the strobe effect, you set the frequency (1 to 50Hz) and number of flashes required (2 - 10 in steps), then either open the camera shutter on B and press the Test button, or use a shutter speed calculated to be no shorter than the duration of the flash burst; the manual tells you how. Obviously only works well in the dark with a close bright moving subject.
The "flash OK" exposure indicator is supposed to show for 3 seconds after the shot is taken, but on my unit it's a good deal shorter than that - briefly flashing 'OK' in the top right-hand corner of the LCD display. The flash ready LED - as another reviewer has remarked - really is distractingly bright. I have masked it with a bit of tape.
It comes with adaptor rings for 52 and 58mm filter threads. The flash ring device mounts onto a type of bayonet fitting with a 77mm external filter thread which is attached directly to the lens filter thread. 52 and 58mm step-up adaptor rings are supplied, I guess any adaptor ring with a 77mm internal thread would be suitable. Filters are attached as normal between the lens and this adaptor. I use it with a Canon 60mm EF-S macro, which has a 52mm thread. Needless to say a tripod is essential, with the camera the unit ready for use weighs in at a hefty 1.75Kg!
It's a pity that there is no additional accessory shoe on the flash body as there is nowhere to put my wireless shutter release receiver - an essential for close-ups, I consider.
