Seth MacGregor and his brother Conal belong to the Sithe, the warrior-like fairy folk who live hidden from mortals behind the veil that separates our worlds. In this book, Seth and Conal are exiled from the Sithe world into the mortal world, into the middle of 16th Century Scotland at the time of the witch trials.
I thought Gillian Philip would struggle to top Bad Faith but she's gone and done it. This is far and away my favourite novel of the year. It romps through many of my favourite subjects - the 16th century witch trials, Scottish history, superstition, fairy folk, sword fighting, it's all in here. Gillian is a wonderful writer; the story flows effortlessly and I couldn't put the book down once I'd started. The characters are fantastic - she's really created something a bit special with Seth MacGregor. He's a brat, he's arrogant, he's awkward, he's selfish, yet he's also vulnerable, a little scared and capable of complete devotion and loyalty to his brother Conal. While I ended up with a total crush on Conal, I identified totally with Seth and fell completely in love with him as a character. And the bad guys are great too, and the strong, powerful women who rule the Sithe.
This book isn't necessarily just for those who like fantasy (I don't particularly) or those in the Young Adult age group (I'm 40!) so if you think either of those things rules it out for you, think again. This is a fantastic book and I can't wait for the sequels to come out. More Seth please!
