Passionate and adventurous jazz from Eric Dolphy in 1960.,
This review is from: Far Cry (Audio CD)This studio session was recorded on December 21, 1960 and features multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, bass clarinet & flute with the great Booker Little(trumpet) and a stellar rhythm section of Jaki Byard(piano), Ron Carter(bass) & Roy Haynes(drums).
The shadow of Charlie Parker is evident on this album although Dolphy is striving to move away from bebop into new freer territory. Highlights of the 8 tracks include the first recording of Dolphy's classic 'Miss Ann' and a stunning unaccompanied alto solo on 'Tenderly'.
All in all, 'Far Cry' is one of Eric Dolphy's finest albums which should appeal to anyone who enjoys adventurous and passionate modern jazz.
