What a bore! This much raved-about novel is one of the most disappointing books I've read recently. The characters are totally flat, with the goodies and the baddies rigidly delineated and ranged against each other. The ridiculous parish priest with his so-called 'secret' is in no way a threatening figure to the heroine and the dénouement holds absolutely no suspense due to the lack of dramatic tension. The description of the heroine's chocolates and her chocolate making palls after a while and the whole book leaves a sickly taste in your mouth. I believe the author is a French teacher; she could have spared us the agony of this clichéd French village.
