Not to be overlooked,
This review is from: Otello (Audio CD)
This Cetra recording gets overlooked. It's a 1955 mono recording made shortly after Del Monaco recorded his first Otello under Erede. The Otello, Carlos Guichandut, must have faced harsh comparison but he's vocally assured, though a tad throaty. Like Vinay he was a baritone. Cesy Broggini is a little shrill as Desdemona and Taddei is a great presence as Jago. You might not think this is adding up to much for four stars, but Franco Capuana manages well considering he was following on from Toscanini's recording a few years before - and let's face it, there are too few recordings of Otello, in my opinion, so this is worth getting... if you're a geek, like me.
