Customer Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Vertigo delivers again., 24 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Deadenders TP (Paperback)
Ed Brubaker is the king of the American Noir. With Deadenders, although still set in America, the influences are clearly from much further afield. At first glance, an easy comparison would be Akira - the biker/scooter gangs, the drugs, the post apocalyptic/post cataclysmic world, but perhaps a better comparison would be with the British Mod scene. Despite being set in the future, Quadrophenia, references to The Who and The Jam, and the fashions that Warren Pleece has dressed the characters up in, gives the book a very retro feel. However, the story is a timeless one. The light and dark between the riches of the city and the deprivation of the outer sectors is in fact very relevant today. The haves and the have-nots. It's a bit psychedelic, a bit sci-fi and time travel, very angsty, but definitely worth a read.
