Save yourself a fortune and a lot of heartache.,
This review is from: Philip's Stargazing with Binoculars (Paperback)
I bought this book after seeing other recommendations, and I heartily endorse them. I wanted a book to tell me what to look for in binoculars, what to look for in the sky, and how to go about it all. If you are thinking about getting into astronomy, on whatever level, you will not go wrong if you buy and read this book before you do anything else. Like the man says, I already had everything I needed to get started, no purchase necessary! I live in the middle of nowhere, and though the skies are clear, there is no opportunity really to try any gear out locally. Using what I learned from this book I was able to sensibly upgrade my equipment by on-line ordering and am cheerfully making use of the knowledge gained. As with any activity, it is good to have other views and this book does not go into huge detail, but then I would not have understood if it had. Best piece of advice in there is to learn the sky before you do anything else. This book has saved me money, protected me from disappointment and enhanced my enjoyment of the skies.
