This review is from: Family Guy - Season 4 [DVD] (DVD)
It's easy to jump on the bandwagon. I see one review has already said This is family guy, so automatically gets 5 star".
It's this exact comment that made me give this review. I own all the other family guy series and enjoy them. They are very creative and funny, if a little 'of the moment'. However series 4 almost totally destroys what the other series created.
For some reason this series concentrates on giving cameo appearances to all the extras in the first 3 series, instead of writing new characters. In a strange twist, in destorys the main characters. Stewie doesn't once voice hatred towards Lois, talk of world domination or even referance his confused sexuality. Instead He's relegated to a sort of 'Critic', passing comments on what's going on. Brian, the original straightman of the storyline, in turned into a racist, biggot, and at times does things that a DOG cannot do (like Marry Lois....a storyline in itself that upsets the balance between the 3 older family characters). What made this programme so good in the first place was the speaking roles given to the Dog and Baby, as a sort of window into what a dog/baby would think in real life. It was relatable, unlike the entire of series 4. Meg and Chris are both brought forward and given 'growing up' moments, which again, comprimises their characters. Peter and Lois are played down to the point we're subject to 100x "This reminds me of the time..." moments, followed quickly by a spoof of something from the 1980's. This wears fast, and the programme sinks with every episode.
As i said, people will automatically call this series the best EVER etc, but it's really not. It's on the same level as simpsons series 9 onwards and Southpark series 4 and 5. That is, 'Ok' but nowhere near what it can do as it's lost sight of what it was about to begin with.
This series is good for a completist, or as one-off TV viewing, but not much more.
Thank god for American Dad.
