Promising but disappointing,
This review is from: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [DVD] (DVD)This anime has much about that should make it stand-out fantastic. The style of the animation and the great sound editing create a languid, hot summer feeling that is quite enjoyable. The main plot idea is not totally fresh, but like with some of the best films, it doesn't need to be - the key is the in the writing. The heroine gains a super-power of being able to leap back into the recent past and change events, but squanders it until she begins to realise that it's leading to trouble. Woven into that is your basic 'awkwardness of teen love / falling in love with your best friend' element. There is also a pretty cool twist at the end.
I think for me the problem is that the dialogue is really too simple and ordinary, and the 'teen love' strand is given far too much attention at the expense of racking up tension as all the time-travelling leads to a mess. Things get more interesting at the end, but I just constantly kept hovering over the progress bar and thinking 'oh my god, another 48 minutes?? I feel like I've watched it for 2 hours already!' - the pace is just too glacial and unlike in other Ghibli-type anime there is no fairytale world to just lose yourself in and admire - it's just an ordinary Japanese city.
So, chances are you'll probably quite enjoy it, but might feel it wasn't as strong as it could be. If you are new to anime try something truly amazing at first, like Ghost in the Shell or Princess Mononoke.
