6 yr old nephew's birthday present,
This review is from: Fascinations - Antworks Illuminated, Uk Plug (Toy)
The major issue that I have with this product is not, oddly, the product itself. It is a perfcetly well made little tank full of blue gel in which ants live and work. I selected this because I thought that the ant and worm farms available using earth might prove visually unstimulating. I bought the already iluminated version for a younger relative mostly on cost grounds as to buy the two separately is quite expensive.
The concept and the equipment were very well received, however enormouse problem with the product is THE LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF HARVESTER ANTS IN THE UK. That's right, Harveser ants, a species that are the only ones that can use in the gel farm and which will cost you upwards of 10 from the one UK supplier that I managed to find. It is certainly not made clear when you buy the farms that this species is he only one that will survive in the gel. If you try and buy them from Antworks direct then they will probably all be dead when they arrive as they are shipped from America, airmail 2-3weeks. The UK suplier posted my first lot out in the middle of the post strike and they arrived dead two weeks later, the second lot arrived at the weekend and they are alive but by the time the live ones arrived the birhday was long past. Ants cost me over £10 for about 25 from the UK supplier so be aware when buying this that the outlay does not end with the cost of the product.

I also bought antworks and illuminator, sent for 60 ants (or were they) got from a different website so couldn't pass them through a tube so ants everywhere, caught about a dozen, by evening one left, the website I got them from said it was cruel to put them in the gel and that they would only survive a day or so as they should be kept in soil, basically I have wasted my money.

M. Isaac Hewitt-harris says:
I was wondering about this, is there any way to take out the gel that comes with (If it is put in before sending off, if you have to put the gel in yourself then it is alright) the ant farm itsself? I would rather put soil in it than artificial Gel.

Hi, I just bought the product and can't seem to find a UK supplier for harvester ants. Could you advice me on where I can get it from?
Thanks - Myrna, Coventry.

harvester ants are the best species for the gel farms - other ant species may just end up dying in these tanks. the only suppliers i found for live harvester ants are http://ants.breezily.co.uk/daydream_testi
