This review is from: Inside Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (Pro Developer) (Paperback)If you are a .Net programmer and are begining to do work with SharePoint then this book is a great place to start.
All the exercises and code in this book work on both WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 versions of SharePoint technologies.
I like the way that within a couple of chapters you get going with some great Features with examples and code provided for you. Then you start learning in more detail about how all the pieces (of SharePoint, IIS and SQL) fit together, so giving you the confidence to start experimenting.
Best practices are emphasised throughout, and each chapter gives you a chunk of knowledge you can use right away.
Although this book was published 2 years ago, it is a great way to learn the key knowledge for SharePoint development. Once finished, just add 3 extra tools to make your life easier: VSEWSS from Microsoft, and WSPBuilder and maybe STSDev from Codeplex.
I have owned my well thumbed copy for ages, and I have lost count of the people I have recommended this book to.
