This review is from: Burial Rites (Kindle Edition)
Such a different book, Burial Rites tells the story of a series of true events in Iceland.
Characters are well drawn, and our sympathy extends to the 'murderer' through the eyes of
an older woman who takes in her pending execution.
I urge readers to give this book a try - not a complex read, but beautifully written.
There is much evidence of research, but this remains a novel. Atmospherically strong, Ms Kent
draws us into the dark landscapes of Iceland - and not simply dark through the absence of light -
and the ambivalence of the young priest sent to convert the 'murderer' prior to her execution.
Oddly enough, the real version of the story, as told later in the novel, almost gets in the way.
It took this reader from his own conjectures to a more certain situation- and I felt less satisfied as a consequence.
