3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the fuse!, 15 July 2011
This review is from: The Apex Explorer Plus Microscope (Electronics)
I had a similar experience to another buyer, wrong mains fuse.
This item ships with a 13A fuse, even though it should have a 3A. The instructions even make a big thing of it.
Before plugging the scope in, I checked the circuit board, and yes the 2 coils had detached. They were easily soldered back and all was fine.
If the scope is switched on for testing at any time, the result is likely to be a damaged circuit board. Not such a problem if you can use a soldering iron, but you shouldn't need to do that.
On the plus side, the scope has good optics. On a par with some industrial units I have used in the past, and is a solidly built all metal item. I find the angled eyepieces far more comfortable to use for longer periods than the vertical ones. When sorted, it's a great scope
If you can handle a minor repair, it's well worth a look. If not there are many good alternatives.

Alan Potter says:
Our apologies for our QC failure on this occasion. We pride ourselves on doing better that that and most of our reviews confirm this. You are the second person with an Explorer with loose coils, and we have now addressed this potential problem. The PCB with the said coils is now gone and the lighting has been converted to LED (with battery backup so that the instrument can be used outside as well) which needs much simpler electronics and is therefore much more reliable than the halogen illumination. We have kept the price the same. One of our sales staff will be contacting you with a view to exchanging for one of the new units and also to make recompense for the trouble you have been caused. We have sold several hundred of these Explorers during the last 2 years, and only 2 have let us down. However that is 2 too many and we have acted to remove any possibility of this happening again. We would be pleased to exchange your Explorer for the new LED version but unfortunately we have been unable to trace your records under 'Mobile Taylor' and would appreciate you contacting us.
best regards
Apex Microscopes

apex explorer : just received our new Microscope and the mains connection isn't working! Am I going to have to solder it? If so, the plug is sealed, do I just cut it off and get a new one
