This review is from: Suppe: Requiem (Audio CD)
Who would have thought that the composer of so much wonderful "light" music and operetta could have written this marvellously impressive Requiem. It is a long work: over 74 minutes, which would render it unsuitable for actual liturgical use in a funeral Mass, although the booklet confirms that it was so used, at least on one occasion. Suppe began his career writing sacred music and wrote this Requiem at the age of 36 in memory of a dear friend and mentor. It is dedicated to no less a personage than Pope Pius IX. It pre-dates Verdi's Requiem by twenty years but is full of the later Italian master's drama and one cannot help thinking that Verdi must have heard this work. The recording is a live performance, not that you would know it;the recording quality and acoustic is superb. The soloists are all excellent but the choir is quite magnificent. Although there are several other recordings of the Requiem now available I cannot imagine that they can surpass this one. I cannot recommend this disc too highly.
