Long and self indulgent,

This review is from: The Last Dark (The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Series Book 4) (Kindle Edition)
Like an A list Hollywood director Stephen Donaldson has become over-indulged by his editors and publisher. The final instalment of the TC series has become flabby in the extreme. Entire chapters of naval gazing, where once there was tight dialogue and real emotion. For the first half the book plods along with a sense of doom and gloom, but with little real sense of jeapordy. The enemy's have just grown too big but there's always an out, whether it's white gold or some strange contrivance. It never feels 'real' in the way that the earlier two trilogies managed in making the extra-ordinary believable.
I really hope Mr Donaldson refocuses himself and concentrates on bringing together a tight character driven series in the mould of Gap or the early TC books. He's phenomenally talented but has wasted his time here on producing a turgid overly long vanity piece.
